If you've ever turned around a can of OLIPOP, you may have noticed a phrase on the ingredients panel, OLISMART®, and thought to yourself, "What the heck is that?" Â
Well, you've landed in the right place to find out! This unique blend of ingredients is what sets OLIPOP apart from other sodas, so let's dive into what OLISMART means, what's in it, and why we use it.Â
What Makes OLIPOP Different?Â
Gone are the days when you had to gulp down over 40 grams of sugar if you wanted a can of soda. With OLIPOP, you can enjoy the crisp, satisfying taste of the soda you grew up sipping, but with 2 to 5 grams of total sugar and high fiber to support your digestive health.*Â
It may sound like magic (soda that's better-for-you?!), but this sorcery is actually science. OLIPOP is the result of years of working alongside leading human gut microbiome researchers to find research-backed ingredients that fuel your microbiome and support digestive health.Â
And that's where OLISMART comes in. OLISMART is our proprietary blend of unique botanicals and prebiotics (the primo food source for beneficial bacteria to support your digestive health). Â
What Is OLISMART?Â
Think of OLISMART as our (not-so) secret sauce. Our OLISMART blend is formulated with multiple sources of prebiotics to help support nutritional diversity, which is important when it comes to feeding a broad spectrum of beneficial gut bacteria. The specific ingredients depend on whether your OLIPOP is refrigerated (9g Fiber Line) or shelf-stable (6g Fiber Line). Our 6g Fiber Line reimagines our refrigerated formula with a carefully selected 6g fiber blend, without compromising flavor or health benefits.Â
Our refrigerated (9g Fiber Line) OLISMART blend is made up of these three sources of prebiotic fibers:Â
Our shelf-stable (6g Fiber Line) OLISMART blend is made up of these three sources of prebiotic fibers:Â
Both blends also contain four botanicals:Â
- Marshmallow root extractÂ
- Calendula flower extractÂ
- Kudzu root extractÂ
- Nopal cactus extractÂ
Why Are We Adding Fiber to Soda?Â
Our diets are out of whack, and it's messing up our microbiomes. 3 in 5 Americans ages 2 and older consume more than the recommended amount of added sugars, with sugary drinks leading the way. In fact, sugar-sweetened beverages represent 24% of all added sugar intake. [1] We’re also not consuming nearly enough fiber. On average, over 90% of Americans aren’t meeting daily fiber thresholds. [2] This massive shift in our diet (less fiber and a lot of refined sugars) is basically wiping out species of bacteria that call your gut microbiome home.Â
The gut microbiome is a collection of microorganisms, including living bacteria, found in your digestive system. This community of microbes directly impacts your health, such as supporting your body's immune response, metabolism, and digestive health. Beneficial bacteria in your gut need food to survive (just like us), and their meal of choice is prebiotic fiber. The only way they can get that fiber is from your diet. So, when you eat too much sugar and not enough fiber, your helpful bacteria go hungry, and they can't do their jobs of supporting your overall health.Â
One of the factors behind the lack of fiber in our diets nowadays is the limited availability and convenience of high-fiber foods. That’s where OLIPOP can help. In addition to eating a variety of fibrous foods, OLIPOP offers 6 to 9 grams of dietary fiber per 12-oz can to help close the fiber gap with every delicious sip.Â
OLISMART: Prebiotic FibersÂ
We want to help you increase your fiber intake, which is why we included several types of prebiotic fibers in OLISMART: cassava root fiber, chicory root inulin, Jerusalem artichoke inulin, acacia fiber, and guar fiber (depending on whether you’re grabbing our 6g or 9g Fiber Line). These research-backed ingredients can help feed your beneficial gut bacteria, so these microbes can support your digestive health.Â
Sure, we could have used just one prebiotic fiber in OLISMART, but the reason we use three in each blend is that different bacterial species in your gut like different foods, so OLISMART aims to bring a diverse blend of prebiotic fibers to the microbes living in your gut. Â
Cassava Root FiberÂ
If you've seen cassava flour in your local grocery store, you've heard of this ingredient. But if you haven't, cassava root is a starchy tuber (similar to a potato) with a slightly nutty, earthy taste. OLISMART uses cassava root fiber because it’s a good source of resistant dextrin, a type of prebiotic fiber that resists digestion and passes to the large intestine, where it feeds your beneficial gut bacteria. [3]Â
Chicory Root InulinÂ
A part of the dandelion family, chicory root is one of the oldest cultivated vegetables in human history. It’s also a great source of inulin, a soluble, prebiotic fiber found naturally in the plant. Inulin has been well studied and acknowledged as a fiber that supports microbial balance through the growth of beneficial bacteria. AKA it helps feed the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut! [4]Â
Jerusalem Artichoke InulinÂ
It's not the artichoke you're thinking of! Also called sunchoke, Jerusalem artichoke is a knobby tuber that is the root of a variety of sunflowers. The Jerusalem artichoke inulin that we use in OLISMART is another great source of soluble prebiotic fiber. [4]Â
Guar FiberÂ
Guar fiber, also called guar gum, is derived from the seeds of the guar plant. Once harvested, the guar seeds undergo a series of manufacturing steps to separate the valuable endosperm from the rest of the seed. As a dietary fiber, guar fiber has garnered attention not only for its functional properties in food production but also for its potential health benefits. This soluble fiber can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet, which is why we use it in our 6g Fiber Line. [5] [6]Â Â
Acacia FiberÂ
Acacia fiber, also known as gum arabic, is a natural gum formed from the hardened sap of various species of the acacia tree, particularly Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal. It has a high soluble fiber content, making it a great ingredient for our 6g Fiber Line. [7]Â
OLISMART: BotanicalsÂ
The four botanicals we use in both our 6g and 9g Fiber Line OLISMART include: Â
- Marshmallow root extract: Yes, it is (somewhat) related to that marshmallow! Traditionally, the confectionary was made using the sticky extract that coats the marshmallow plant's roots. But that same sticky extract is used for more than just desserts. Marshmallow root, which is harvested from a flower that is commonly found in marshy areas, produces a sap-like substance often found in food and drink products. [8]Â
- Calendula flower extract: Features beautiful golden flower petals, which are edible and taste mildly sweet and peppery. They offer beneficial plant compounds, such as beta-carotene. The petals can be used as a natural dye, culinary garnish, or applied topically. [9]Â
- Kudzu root extract: Kudzu is a vine native to Southeast Asia that has been harvested for its root. Like many other plant roots, kudzu root contains various compounds and helpful nutrients. [10]Â
- Nopal cactus extract: If you have ever traveled to the Southwestern United States or certain parts of Mexico, you may have noticed a particular kind of cactus that resembles prickly flat paddles. These cacti are nopal cactus (also known as prickly pear), and believe it or not, they are edible and quite delicious. [11]Â
An OLISMART Choice: The TakeawayÂ
There you have it; we’ve divulged our (not so) secret recipe. Use it wisely and remember that OLISMART is made with love for you, the drinker, which is the most essential ingredient of all. That special something, combined with our unique blend of prebiotic fiber and botanicals, is what makes every sip of OLIPOP refreshing, delicious, and great for your digestive health!*Â
